How to Boost Your Dog’s Immunity for Autumn
7 November, 2025
Autumn brings not only colorful leaves but also a shift in daily rhythm — and
with that, changing needs for our dogs. Temperature swings, higher humidity, and
less outdoor activity can all influence the body’s natural defenses. And just
like with people, prevention is key. For dogs, it all starts in the food bowl.
Quality Nutrition as the Foundation of Health
A balanced diet rich in animal proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants helps maintain strong immunity year-round. Dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors often have higher energy needs in colder months — so you can slightly increase their food portion. Instead of following the feeding table on the bag to the letter, keep an eye on your dog’s overall condition. Noticeable weight loss or, on the contrary, weight gain may signal that the feeding amount needs adjusting.
Supporting Immunity with Supplements
Autumn is the perfect time to reach for targeted nutrition in the form of supplements you can add to your dog’s regular food. Supplements containing beta-glucan, zinc, or vitamins C and E help strengthen the immune system and support the body’s response to changing weather.
Different types of oils are also great helpers — such as salmon, flaxseed, or hemp oil, all rich in omega-3s and beneficial for skin and coat health (a shiny, full coat is one of the signs of inner wellbeing). Milk thistle oil is another useful choice, especially for liver regeneration. And from time to time — in reasonable amounts — you can use olive or coconut oil for hydration and shine. Just make sure to choose cold-pressed oils and always follow the recommended dosage.

Movement, Recovery, and Mental Wellbeing
Colder weather often tempts us to shorten walks, but regular exercise is just as important in autumn. It keeps dogs in shape, supports digestion, and helps maintain a healthy mind. When the weather outside is gloomy, you can replace outdoor activity with fun indoor options — interactive games (snuffle mats, treat-dispensing toys, hide-and-seek), trick training, or obedience practice.
Don’t Forget Preventive Care
During autumn, especially with short-haired breeds, it pays to think about proper clothing — a functional or lightly insulated coat helps keep your dog warm and prevents chills. After coming home from a walk, make sure to dry your dog thoroughly — damp fur can lead to skin irritation or a cold.
Shorter days also mean less natural sunlight and therefore a lower intake of vitamin D, which plays a key role in immune function — another reason why complete, balanced nutrition is so important.
The Power of Balance
A strong immune system doesn’t rely on one miracle product — it’s the harmony of good nutrition, enough movement, proper recovery, and preventive care. Give your dog just a few extra minutes each day: check their condition, offer quality food, and spend time together.
In return, you’ll have a happy companion who’ll enjoy every autumn walk with you to the fullest.
